Balayage- Balayage hair color has been around for years. It started in France and literally means sweep. We sweep with the brush hand painting highlights on the hair. This differs from traditional hair highlighting because the balayage hair technique does not enclose the hair in foils. The lightening agent on the balayage hair is lightly blended to the scalp with a heavier concentration of product on the ends of the hair. Or the lightener can be concetrated equally on the balayage hair. This technique traditionally allows a more natural placement and blend of color. However in the past few years balayage hair or ultra-balayage hair has become synonymous with bleach blonde, ash blonde, platinum blonde and the silver blonde hair craze.
The few drawbacks to ultra-balayage is the lightener used is susceptible to drying out after achieving only 4 levels of lift. This could mean multiple sessions to the salon before achieving the ultra ash blonde, platinum blonde or silver blonde desired. Natural ash blonde hair will lighten to the lightest blonde easily but brunette hair color and red hair color clients may need multiple sessions. In addition, there is no option to reapply lightener to increase the lightening effect in one session. Another drawback with balayage is it can be more difficult to retouch without overlapping the previously colored strands. This is the primary reason for the development of Keratin rebonding agents such as Olaplex and B-3. Balayage hair technique does give a beautiful transition of color but the limitations and drawbacks should be noted. Matthew Adam's personal choice for achieving a natural transition of color for ash blonde hair and platinum blonde hair is to use a technique called Foilayage.
Babylights- Babylights are just hair highlights that are taken in very thin sections. They are typically done with balayage hair technique and ombre hair color applications for clients who want to see a few highlights all the way to the scalp.
Color melt- Color melt is the technique of applying hair color to the new growth and then applying lightener over the color while it is still processing. The lightener is run through the processing color and the ends of the hair. the lightener does not lighten the processing color as much as the ends of the hair. This gives the color the appearance of melting into a lighter color. This is a great technique for red hair color but not the best choice for clients that want a smoky root or ash blonde hair. Another way to achieve a great color melt is to apply a dark ash blonde toner over hair highlights at the scalp area and a lighter toner blending to the ends of the color. This can create a very nice color melt for ash blonde hair.
Ombre hair color - Ombre hair color is still a cool look when it is performed tastefully. Ombre hair color is the practice of leaving dark hair color from the scalp to about 6"-8" down the lengths before blending into a lighter color. Sections of the hair are backcombed and sometimes woven before applying hair lightener. The hair receiving the lightener can be placed in foil or plastic wrap. This keeps the hair separated and allows for a lighter color to be achieved. A similar effect can be achieved using a balayage hair technique. Matthew's favorite way to achieve this look is to incorporate traditional hair highlights or foilayage highlights in with the ombre hair color application.
Sombre - Sombre is Sexy! Sombre is still being defined however it can be best described as a a soft ombre hair color. It combines ombre hair color, traditional hair highlights / babylights and a color melt technique. This creates a beautiful, sexy and seamless transition of color.
Foilayage- Foilayage technique is Matthew's favorite technique to achieve ash blonde hair. The technique is similar to traditional hair highlights placed in foil. The difference is in the application. Lightener is applied all the way to the scalp in every other foil. The alternating foils receive the lightener applied in a manner that mimics a balayage application. With the lightener enclosed in foils more control over the application is maintained and lighter blonde hair colors are achievable with the one session at the salon. An ombre hair color technique can also be applied to hair left outside the foils. This is used if the desire is to have ash blonde hair or platinum blonde hair on all the hair ends.
